Atlanta got it’s chant on at the Variety Playhouse in Little Five points with Deva Premal/Miten/Manose and Kirtan chant-master Krishna Das. Altogether, a different type of concert for the Variety. There was carpet in front of the stage instead of the usual standing room only section. Shoes were taken off. There was no applause after the songs. Instead, the artists and audience would meditate until the next song. The last song and a non-chant song by Miten got very enthusiastic applause.
I apologize for the lack of crispness in the focus but I was only allowed to use my Canon S3is point n shoot digital. Still I like the movement and color of the pictures. And it’s a LOT lighter than my Canon 5D!! Not to mention better than a phone picture. The Variety lighting is bright and colorful and photographs well. The sound is always the best. Simply the coolest venue in town.
If you want high quality prints of any of these, I have high res versions on my zenfolio site.
Krishna Das related a story about what lead him to chanting. He was in India, outside of a temple and heard some singing. He went in out of curiosity and listened and then started chanting along, with everybody else and was hooked.
Closeup of Krishna’s most mellow harmonium. That’s Hanuman, the Hindu monkey god, decorating the Bina.
The busy hands of Arjun…
After a break Deva, Miten and Manose take the stage…
Kirtan is growing in popularity, even in the Atlanta community I’ve heard. Krishna Das and Deva Premal are two of the more well known “Kirtankars”. If you’re interested, look up local yoga studios who will likely have the inside scoop. Also there’s lots of Kirtan info on Krishna Das’ site
Deva Premal and Miten official site (don’t forget Manose!)
Here’s a little video from youtube featuring the song “Om namo bhagavate”. In the top ten of my favorite yoga tunes.
And a bit of Krishna Das, Govinda Hare Gopal Hare
Here’s a sampling of Girish. Another Kirtankar with a terrific voice and modern beats. I was lucky enough to attend one of his appearances in a local yoga studio. Hooray for Stillnessyoga in Marietta, GA for hosting his visit for a very cool yoga session.
